Basic Handling Skills Assessment
Service Description
The basic handling skills test is the first step in your roadcraft and is designed to fit in with the graduated licensing system to enable the novice rider to develop their skills in a safe environment prior to applying for the NZTA Motorcycle Leaner licence (Class 6L) and taking the Motorcycle theory test. This test is provided as a first step in motorcycling and is aimed at familiarising the rider with the techniques required to start, stop and control a motorcycle. On successful completion of the test, the rider obtains the pre-requisite certificate that is required before applying to gain a learner licence. The Basic handling skills test consists of four stages: 1. Basic turn and stop 2. Figure of eight and park 3. Linking figures of eight 4. Increased speed and emergency stop Each stage is broken down into varying combinations of the following tasks: ● Move off ● Straight ride ● Corner ● Stop ● Park In completing the tasks above you will be assessed against the relevant test items below: ● Looking in the correct direction ● Signalling correctly ● Making head checks before changing position ● Lateral position of motorcycle ● Control of motorcycle ● Using appropriate speed ● Parking observation ● Parking movement.
